The most common materials for fillings are tooth-coloured (composite resin) and silver (amalgam).
First, your dentist will apply local anaesthesia to the area near the affected tooth, to ensure you are comfortable throughout the procedure. Then your dentist gently removes the decay and damaged enamel. If the nerve is exposed your dentist will put a covering over it so it does not cause any discomfort. The tooth is then filled with a material of your choice.
The lifespan of filling depends mainly on the type of material chosen, and how well you take care of your teeth.
